Christmas Themed DIYs!

Evening beauties, so I'm currently sat writing this on the last leg of a very long and boring train ride. The weekend itself however was not. I have seen so many beautiful gifts at Christmas fairs, from rosemary and rock salt bread, to bean bags for your phones and delectable homemade candles, leaving me feel very festive. The only problem was the price tag!

Yes they may be the cutest thing every to give your dog walkers long lost husband - but do they have to really cost that much?! In the run up to Xmas I'll be bringing you some of my favorite gift ideas - as always - for a fraction of the store price. But I'm going to need your guys help to let me choose!

So, without further ado here are the options for the first Xmas DIY. Feel free to choose as many (or as few!) as you like. You can even pop back and vote every day! Make sure to leave your suggestions in the comments below as I'll be picking one of them to make too!

My Perfume Collection: Top Picks

*Confessions Slight OCD: Sorry about all the stock images, sadly I couldn't bring my entire collection to university and I couldn't live with using half my photographs half stock!*
Diesel's Loverdose EDP
I lusted after this perfume for months before I was given it for Christmas. It's is gorgeous! The perfect addictive and sexy nighttime scent with top notes of mandarin and star anise with hints of liquorice and vanilla on a rich base of dry wood. If you haven't already tried this I'd highly recommend it! It lasts all night long.

Taylor Swift's Wonderstruck
This  is my go-to perfume at the moment. I purchased it at the beginning of August and have barely been seen without it since! It's a delectably sweet and fruity scent with hints of vanilla (seeing a trend yet?) apple, peach and raspberry with just a hint of honeysuckle, white hibiscus and freesia paired with golden amber and sandalwood. Best of all it's just £20 for 30ml. My only criticism is that it's not particularly long lasting and wears off pretty easily as the day goes on. If you buy this I'd definitely recommend investing in a small spritzer bottle for midday touch ups to leave you smelling beautifully sweet all day long.

This is another scent I coveted for years before purchasing it in the January sales earlier on in the year. It's a beautiful summery scent that reminds me of my childhood garden where we had two huge apple trees. It also comes with just a hint of orange. If you're looking to stretch out the summer months or just searching for the perfect summer scent for 2014 - this is it!

I've repurchased this twice since I discovered it back in 2011. They smell great throughout the day and are perfect to stash away in your purse or schoolbag for extra top ups! The best bit is they warm to your skin so the longer you wear it the more the scent is brought out. For the scent, the clue is in the name but you also get subtle hints of jasmine and tonka bean.

I received this for Christmas. I was in love with the Jingle G scent they released a couple of Christmasses ago - but sadly by the time I'd finally gotten around to buying it it was out of stock everywhere! I'm so happy I bought this instead - it smells so clean and fresh, just like I've gotten straight out of the bath. They've since redesigned the packaging of this too, but I love my little punk rocker. After the perfume is spent I think I'll put her on my desk.

Simple Pleasure's Peppermint Twist Hand & Body Cream

It gets to Christmas time and of course I have to crack this out. Simple Pleasure's Peppermint Twist Hand & Body Cream has been my favorite moisturiser for years. I first purchased this from Tk Maxx for just £3.99 (RRP $2.99 over in the states) in the winter of 2009 and have been using it on and off ever since. Three years later it's the first thing I reach for after washing my hands - and this is coming for a self-confessed moisturiser addict!

It smells devine and lasts absoloutely forever (this is only my second tube !) and is the perfect pamper gift this Christmas season. A great gift idea would be to make a hamper with some ripped tissue paper and maybe a few festive Lush bath bombs for the bestie and having a pamper night in together watching Christmas films in your PJs.

Simple Pleasures have a whole range of products such as Gingerbread (another festive treat I'd recommend!), Pink Sugar and Candy Swirl Hand & Body Cream to but I know it can be a little hard to get hold of in the UK so I'd definitely keep an eye out for it on eBAY. I recently purchased a batch of about eight for £20 because I never wanted to be without it!

Statement Jewellery & Xmas Tips!

Welcome to the first of the Christmas blog posts! There is no doubt that this Christmas it's all about the statement jewellery. Rhinestones, sequins and feathers - the more the merrier! Here are some of my favorite picks I have picked up this Winter for you to rock the Christmas parties (they'll make great stocking stuffers too!). I've already started the Christmas shopping - have you?

Top Tip: If you're thinking about buying jewellery for a friend  this year, why not make your own cardboard backing out of some festive wrapping paper and a cereal box. I guarantee your friends will thank you for the extra effort (hopefully in chocolate!)

Gold Drop Earrings with Thread Detail - £1.50, Primark

I have been looking for a good pair of statement earrings for a long white now. I'm constantly finding pairs that I adore but they've gone am little too far with the jewels to ever be wearable off the catwalk. Who knew I would stumble upon these right on my door step? And for such a great price too! Once again Primark, you have truly saved the day. I have seen this thread detailing in so many places! They're a lot more subtle - and wearable! - than having a block of colour (which can also be really heavy on the ears). I have paired these with a high pony tail, Stud Jumper from Peacocks, £18, my favorite jeggings and ankle boots.

Bejeweled Statement Bracelet - £15, Miss Selfridge

The perfect accessory to bring a little sparkle to your Christmas. I can see this getting a lot of wear this season. Imagine pairing this with your favorite LBD, glamorous clutch and gorgeous heels, you're guaranteed to be glittering under the Christmas light!

Dream Catcher Earrings - £15, Miss Selfridge

This, albeit was a very summery choice. These earrings are huge! But I think they are some of the best I have seen and I knew, from the moment I saw them, I needed them in my life. I am not entirely sure if they are going to see out the season as earrings, they may be deconstructed into some stunning room decor and the earring hooks to some beautiful silver crane earrings. If you're thinking about DIY Xmas gifts this year, deconstructing some of your old jewellery to create a bejewelled jumper or beanie can make the perfect gift - or addition to your own wardrobe!

All this and I'm still on the hunt for the perfect statement necklace - post your suggestions in the comments below! More Xmas posts coming very shortly!

Lush Jackie Oates Colour Supplement Review

Being pale is both a blessing and a curse. Okay, so mainly it's a curse. I can barely find a foundation for my skin tone, let alone a BB cream as they typically come in two or three broad umbrella shades. I'd had my eve on this product for a while but decided for £8.95 a tub I'd look elsewhere for a cheaper solution. Put simply, there just isn't one!

I suffer from occasional breakouts and my skin errs on the sensitive side, some of the chemicals creams or foundations can break me out in a matter of days so it's incredibly refreshing to find that Lush's Jackie Oates Colour Supplement that contains all these wonderful natural ingredients such as oatmilk, honey and aloevera to cool skin and reduce redness.

I use this either mixed with my moisturiser for light coverage or by itself, dab on a couple of spots of concealer and I'm fresh faces and ready for the day! Plus I smell gloriously of oats (making me crave porridge constantly).

As for the coverage I wouldn't say it was spectacular. If you suffer from acne damaged skin or hyper pigmentation or just prefer fuller coverage then I'd say this definitely isn't for you, opt for something more pigmented. But if like me, you suffer from occasional breakouts that can be dealt with a quick swipe of concealer then this is a great way of getting a fresh and glowing look to the rest of your face.

The only flaw I would point out is that if you're using it straight from the tub I find you don't get a lot of usage for your pennies, but when mixed with my moisturiser in the palm of my hand (Simple's Hydrating Moisturiser) I find I can make it stretch a little longer.

Nude Lips!

Usually when I have to reach for a lipstick my hand heads straight for the burgundy and wines without hesitation but lately I have been loving my nudes. Regular readers will know that I have been cursed with porcelain pale skin that rivals that of Dracula himself and it's a pain to find anything - foundation, concealer, lipstick even eyebrow pencils - to match my pale complexion. Which is why I was so surprised when I purchased my first nude lipstick earlier in the week.

1. Model Co. Party Proof Matte Lipstick in the shade Kitty
2. MUA Matte Lipstick in the shade Totally Nude
3. Rimmel Lasting Finish Colour Rush in the shade Drive Me Nude

Crazy right? My FIRST nude lipstick. I was adamant that the colour just would not suit me and I'd end up looking like I was dressing for Halloween with my frequently messy hair and different coloured eyes, paired with my pale skin and ghostly lips I was sure I'd look like a corpse! But maybe that's just all the #Bloggoween planning going to my head? I love the way nude lipsticks make me feel - it's like this whole other dimension of makeup has opened up right in from of me after years of neglecting to see it I know, to the wider beauty community this is far from breaking news. But for me, it's wonderful!

Not sure if nude lipstick will suit you? Apply a small amount of concealer to your lips followed by a hint of gloss (to stop them looking chalky). It's a heck of a lot cheaper than rushing out to the shops!

Ombre Bonfire Nails

My favorite autumn trend (bar tartan, of course) is metallic nails. I don't have a whole lot of time to spend on mine but when I do I like them to make an impact. Here's how to recreate my Bonfire Night inspired nails that got so much love on instagram yesterday! They remind me so very much of what I pictured Katniss' when I read the first part of the Hunger Games trilogy (who else will be heading off to see Catching Fire late in the month?)

I created this look using two polishes I picked up from the wonderful Bead's of Jade's blog sale (still open here!) earlier in the season:

For the ombre effect I'd typically use a sponge but it can get very messy and, as I didn't have one to hand I decided to attempt it with the lacquer brush itself and was very pleasantly surprised with the result (especially considering long past my bedtime at this point!). I absolutely can't wait to try this with a shimmering silver and gun metal or a mint green and baby blue in the spring!

What's your favorite seasonal nail polish?

Avoiding the Winter Blues

If you're a regular reader, or have seen me zipping to and from my classes - coffee in hand - you will know just how horrendously busy I've been recently! Whether it's catching up on classes or dashing off to work there's definitely one thing I never have time for - a cold! Here are my top cold busting tips to avoid this year's winder blues...

1. Wash your Hands
I know it's cliché but the number one way to prevent being ill is to wash your hands, expressly after visiting a public place (such as a classroom, shopping centre or even a bus) and before eating. You'd be surprised just how effective this little trick is!

2. Use Antibacterial Soap
Anti-bacteria soap is a great way of being harsh on germs without being harsh on your hands. But being on a tight student budget I tend to reach for the cheapest soap I can find (which, in some cases leaves your hands dry, abrasive and smelling like you've just walked out of  a doctors office!). So, I was incredibly surprised when I found Dettol and E45 new Softness range* of soap for just £2.49! Described as the ultimate in pampering, protection and prevention their new collection teams the Dettol's trusted germ protection (killing 99.9% of germs AND removing viruses!) with E45's replenishing formula to leave your hands protected and super soft and it comes in three delectable scents: Lotus Flower, Camomile and Honey. Best of all, after two weeks of constant use, I have barely scratched the surface and haven't had so much as a sniffle.

3. Top Up With Hand Gel
If you can't make it to the sink, antibacterial hang gel is another great way of keeping away the winter blues, especially if you're as busy as me! I always carry my trusted M&S Antibacterial in my handbag - it leaves my hands smelling great too! But please remember that antibacterial hand gel only works when your hands are clean so don't go skipping the sinks!

3. Stock up on the Vitamin C
Whether it's juice, tablets or just some good old fruit. Vitamin C is thought to help boost your immune system and is essential for growth and repair, meaning that not only aiding in the prevention of nasty bugs but fighting them too!

4. Avoid it!
This is a brilliantly blunt tip I was given by my old headmaster. If one of your classmates or flat mates is ill there is really no better way to avoid catching the bug than to avoid them! Harsh but true this is a lifesaver during exam and deadline day when everyone's feeling a little run down and under the weather it's so easy to catch something that'll leave you stranded in bed with a hot water bottle and some ice cream (actually, that doesn't sound like half a bad idea when you put it like that!).

How are you avoiding the winter blues this year?
